Lesson 9 of 11 · The money

Why does joining a campaign late earn nothing?

Everyone tells you to be early. Almost nobody says how early, because saying it requires measuring budgets as they drain. We measure them.

The clip that earned nothing

Here is the situation this lesson exists to prevent, and it happens to almost everybody once.

You find a campaign paying well. You spend an evening on a clip of it. The clip does 200,000 views over the following week — genuinely good, better than most of what you will make in your first month. And you are paid nothing, or nearly nothing, because the budget emptied on Tuesday and your views arrived on Thursday.

$400 → $0

What 200,000 views is worth at today's typical $2.00 per 1,000 — and what it is worth on a campaign whose pot is already empty.

Budget still on the campaign

Views arriving on your clip

The clip was posted on day four and did everything you wanted. The pot was empty on day five. Almost all of its views arrived after there was anything left to pay them with, and no amount of editing changes that — only the day you started does.

Shapes, not measurements. Days along the bottom.

Nothing about the clip was wrong. The timing was wrong, and timing is the one input in clipping that costs nothing to get right and cannot be fixed afterwards.

Why a campaign is not a job with a deadline

The end date on a campaign is not when it stops paying. It is the latest it could possibly stop paying. What actually ends it is the pot running out, and the pot is shared by everybody clipping it — so the better the campaign looks, the faster it goes, because a good rate attracts exactly the crowd that empties it.

That produces the effect that catches beginners: the campaigns that are easiest to find are the ones that have been findable the longest, which is to say the ones with the least left. By the time a campaign has been passed around a Discord, it is frequently already spent.

One example is an anecdote. What the whole board shows is a pattern with a number attached — and the number is smaller than almost anyone expects.

Why do clips get rejected, and who actually pays?

The work is done, the views landed, and the submission comes back rejected. Most of the reasons are on a short list, and all of them are checkable in advance.
